The ROSAT all-sky survey view of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC).
Abstract
During the ROSAT all-sky survey (RASS) 516 X-ray sources have been detected in a field of 13°5×13°5 centered on the Large Magellanic Cloud. The field was covered from July 1990 to January 1991 with a rather deep exposure (400 s to 20 ks) during the RASS. The authors discuss X-ray parameters of the sources (position, count rates, hardness ratios, extent, and time variability during the RASS). Less than 80 of the X-ray sources have been known before ROSAT. Identifications with objects from optical, radio and infrared wavelengths allow to separate LMC candidates from foreground stars and background objects.
